STARTING THE YOUNG HORSE: [breaking in]
what it gets you: A horse that will lead and tie up, will accept its legs being handled and feet trimmed and shod. Will load onto a horse float without drama, your horse will be desensitized to scary stuff such as flapping bags and tarps, machinery, traffic, water, dogs and anything else I can imagine that it may have cause to take fright at. It will stand quietly to be saddled and mounted and wait, will give its head left and right to a polite rein pressure. Will move forward into walk trot and canter from light leg pressure and stop when asked with the reins. It will have speed and direction control to complete a simple obstacle course, dressage test, trail ride or muster.
How quiet and / or bombproof and how responsive to the rein and leg cues I train into the horse will depend to some degree on the trainability of the individual horse. Some horses are naturally more willing and acceptable to training than others, due to temperament or past experience
Please take particular note that when starting a young horse I have it for approximately 4 to 6 weeks, this breaks down to about 20 to 30 hours of ridden work so it is a BIG ASK to expect it to be suitable for a learner, novice or timid rider. Young horses need cool and experienced riders to develop them to their full potential.
I do my utmost to train as many rein, leg and voice cues as possible in the time I have a horse. I want a controlled correct response to my cues, not a random reaction that is correct only some of the time. Most importantly the horse must move forward from light leg pressure and stop/rein back from light rein pressure.
ADDITIONAL COSTS: Feed, requirements and cost discussed before I take delivery of the horse
FARRIER All horses will be able to be shod but if shoeing is required I use a professional farrier.
DENTAL. My preferred option is for any dental needs such as wolf teeth removal, floating of sharp points etc to be attended to before the horse comes to me , if this is not practicable I will arrange for a professional equine dentist or vet to attend
VETERINARY. We take the utmost care with your horse to ensure there are none but in the event that veterinary care is required it will be done in consultation with the owner except in an emergency where the horse’s wellbeing is paramount. Costs to owner
*All prices are subject to change at any moment* * Please note; . I am booked out with horses until Christmas (now being July)*
